THE MORISSETTE FAMILY LINKS

Please return often because the entries will continue to have additions as new information is found. This is what I have completed so far. There are only so many hours in the day.

The first section is the Baptismal records from Notre Dame de Chicago, Cook, Illinois. The following images are the history of the church. My great great grandfather Pierre Morissette m. Sophie Menard/Morand came to Chicago with his family in 1871, the year of the Chicago Fire. My great grandfather Victor was born in Jan 1872. I found Pierre Morissette in the 1880 Illinois census listed as Peter Morissey.

Pierre's second cousin Francois Morissette m. Louise Menard/Morand were already living here not too far from the fire and he was a ship's carpenter. I have found Francois Morissette in the 1860 Illinois census with his name indicated as Francis Morrisshey and his widow Louise in the 1880 Illinois census, however, have not found him in the 1870 Illinois census most likely because of the spelling of the last name. Francois's children were all born in Illinois. The Morissette's all attended Notre Dame de Chicago which is not too far from the region of the fire. Pierre was a ship's carpenter as was his son Alphonse. His other two sons, Peter and Raphael were also carpenters. I have wondered if Pierre came here before or after the fire. At that time they needed carpenters.

There is also St. John the Baptist Church see next image. Some of the Morissettes listed here were attending this church until their respective neighborhood churches were built. Other Morissettes preferred to attend Notre Dame de Chicago. As a result some of the records are somewhere but no one knows where. My family of Morissettes lived in the Brighton Park area which is next to Bridgeport. These are neighborhood sections of Chicago.

The next section will be St. Joseph and St. Anne's baptismal records. The following images are the history of the church. My great grandfather Victor Morissette m. Julia Gagner were the godparents of the bells at this church. Throughout the church you will see the name Morissette, Langlois, Lebeau and others who contributed to the building of the church. The french in this community built the homes and the businesses where there was nothing but vacant land.
